Why Westabout?
More people have been into space than have sailed solo round the world without stopping. Of those who have sailed round the world, most have taken an easterly course, Very few have attempted to take a westerly route.
Why?
The simple reason is that both the winds and the currents flow in an easterly direction in the Southern Ocean and almost anything floating will eventually circumnavigate the world in an easterly direction.
The ultimate solo yachting challenge is to circumnavigate the world in a westerly direction, working against the currents and the wind. This is no easy challenge, as, quite apart from the opposing wind and tides, there is no land in the way to break up the relentless forces of nature and the resulting huge seas.
